In particular, Mr Obama's choice of evangelical pastor Rick Warren to deliver a religious invocation at the ceremony has raised hackles.

Mr Warren, a best-selling author and leader of a Californian megachurch, has won praise by calling for more attention to eradicating poverty, fighting Aids in Africa, expanding educational opportunities and global warming.

But gay rights advocates are angry over MrWarren's backing of a California ballot initiative to ban gay marriage.

They said having MrWarren deliver the invocation was tantamount to endorsing bigotry.
